One Nation "Under God."

by Rev. Nathan Meador

Recently, the Supreme Court of our nation side-stepped a hot button issue in our nation. They ruled that a California (insert your favorite deragatory remark about that state here) atheist had no legal standing to sue to have the words "under God" removed from the Pledge of Allegiance. The hight court made no ruling on the constitutionality of the phrase. In short, they ducked it. The black robed jurist-thinkers only delayed the inevitable. Eventually someone with standing will bring the exact same suit and another court will have to rule. There are no Harry "the Buck stops here" Trumans on the high court.

Now I will not use this section to challenge the fallacy of the "seperation of church and state" that has been read into our constitution. However, read the text of the First Amendment or the entire Constitution and you will not find that phrase! Instead, I would like to use our monthly newsletter get-together to challenge the fallacy held by the California Atheist and many others that we are not a nation under God.

I will not go as far as many of the popular television preachers in this discussion either. Our nation is not the New Israel. We can't read the promises made to ancient Israel and say that they belong to us as the new "chosen nation." The promises made to Israel belong to those who belong by grace to the faith of Abraham, the one who believed God and it was credited to him as righteousness.

But we are a nation "under God." I can say that most certainly because of what is written in Romans 13:

Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God...For he is God's servant to do you good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword for nothing. He is God's servant, an agent of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer. Therefore, it is necessary to submit to the authorities, not only because of possible punishment but also because of conscience.   (Romans 13:1-5 )

EVERY government is established by God. They are used for His purposes. The very government that you complain about daily, is established by God. It is there to serve us, to protect us, to allow us to worship God in safety and security. It is also there to punish wrongdoers and beat back evil in the world. We MUST submit to them because of the Fourth Commandment. We don't have an option.

This government is established by God. Black robed men and women can buy the arguments of foolish atheists, but we are still a nation under God. And because of the nation God has placed us in that should make us rejoice AND get serious. For we are governed and the government. So DAILY, pray for those who lead us, just like you pray for me, for they are God's servants. Pray that this nation will beat back the attempts of the fools who say there is no god. Pray that we would never forget God's goodness to us. And then live as citizens of this nation "UNDER GOD!"
